The Wind Symphony, conducted by Robert Freeman, is the premier performing ensemble of the West Monroe High School Bands. With the membership of approximately 85 musicians, this group performs a wide array of musical styles from orchestral transcriptions to contemporary works written specifically for the wind band idiom. Music is traditionally grade five or higher for all contests and performances. Although it is open to auditions, its members are primarily upper classmen.
The Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Michael Spears, is an elite group comprised of 45 of the top wind and percussion players in the Wind Symphony. This ensemble was created to provide an additional challenge for our most advanced players, as well as providing them exposure to a wider range of literature. It rehearses two days per week and performs at district competitions as well as spring concerts. This ensemble performs grade six literature.
The Symphonic Band is an auditioned ensemble of approximately 80 musicians. This ensemble is primarily underclassmen and performs grade 3 to grade 5 literature. This group participates at district and state competitions as well as regional and national events.
Marching Rebel Band
The Rebel Band has enjoyed consistent Superior ratings at Marching and Concert festivals since 1966, garnering public as well as critical acclaim along the way. Most recently, the Rebel Band marched in the Inauguration Parade for President George W. Bush.
Rebeljazz is an invitation-only jazz band that meets once day a week after school. Performing standard jazz classics as well as contemporary jazz works, this band is in demand for functions locally and regionally. It has approximately 25 members.
